Hopefully when israel finishes their mission, there will be enough brave Iranians, like you, to bring this barbaric regime to an end, and the world can see peace in the middle east.
An Israeli friend moved to Crete with his wife 2 years ago as they could not stand the situation at home any longer. For years they had been out every Saturday in Tel Aviv protesting against the Netanyahu regime, but society had become so polarised that that former friends and neighbours regarded them as “traitors” for not supporting Netanyahu, and this was before the 7th October invasion. Now they are full of anxiety because their daughter is still at university in Tel Aviv, sleeping in shelters every night and trying to find a flight out of the country.
History tells us that the fall of the mullahs will not automatically lead to a democratic Iran, just as the triumph of Israel will not lead to a peaceful Middle East.
I’ve just stumbled across your post from the weekly stack - something I don’t always actually read if I’m being frank.
So I’m really glad I didn’t miss this post and have now subscribed.
We were watching the UK news at lunchtime today and the news presenter was almost wringing her hands at the destruction those nasty Israelis are inflicting on those peace loving Islamic Republican Guard Corps etc.
Meanwhile in the real world we remember how much the Islamic Regime has done to deserve this thumping they are getting. More please.
Thank you for writing this. Those of us who have lived here all our lives have very little idea what it is to have a repressive government, and we need to rip the blinders off. I'm glad you're here and let's pray (to whomever) our country does not follow Iran's path. It happened so very quickly.
When I think of the 2009 riots, I remember the murder of Neda Agha-Soltan by the Basiji. The first responders who tried to calm her down as she bled to death.
Allow me to add something that seems to be missing from the discussion.
America and Israel have been adhering to the policies of IMPERIAL JAPAN.
JUST AS JAPAN EMBARKED ON A DIPLOMATIC OFFENSIVE TO DEFLECT ATTENTION FROM THEIR PLANS TO ATTACK PEARL HARBOR, TRUMP EMBARKED ON PSEUDO PEACE NEGOTIATIONS TO LULL IRAN INTO CONFIDENCE THAT IT WOULD NOT BE ATTACKED.
Your jubilation is most understandable in this situation. I caution you to consider Israel's reasons for doing what they do. They are not bombing the Basij to help you. A democratic republic of Iran is not any more to their liking than the Islamic Republic that currently exists. Nobody could be expected to forgive the regime for its repression, but please don't make the mistake many Iraqis and Afghans did.
Great piece, Shay. I’ve been thinking about you during this week and wondering what you are experiencing. This answers it!
Glad you made it through that!
Shay - maybe your next column could be what your late father would think of recent events.
He was an impossibly complicated man and complex thinker. I couldn't dare guess.
Awesome
Bravo. Thank you for this
I have called on Iran for regime change. They can help us. Trump needs to go. https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/iran-2-weeks?r=3m1bs

Do you think Israel will rest if any of the Middle East is not under its control?

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
